Mexico dominate at Toluca Beach

Toluca, Mexico, May 29, 2012 - Mexican duo Mayra García and Bibiana Candelas outclassed compatriots Martha Revuelta and Vanessa Virgen 21-15, 21-11 to capture the gold medal of the Toluca Beach Volleyball Tournament, the fifth stop of the 2012 NORCECA Circuit on Sunday.

Cuba’s Ion Canet and Niriam Sinal took the bronze medal following a three-set battle with Canada’s Jacqueline Tait amd Victoria Cowley 18-21, 21-18, 15-11.

In the semifinals, Garcia/Candelas crushed Tait/Cowley 21-4, 21-14 while Revuelta/Virgen upset Canet/Sinal prevailing 17-21, 21-12, 15-11 in a three-set thriller.

In the men’s division Mexico’s Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros downed Cuba’s Sergio Gonzalez and Karell Piña 21-15, 21-19 to claim gold.

The bronze medal went to Puerto Rico’s Roberto Rodríguez and Erick Haddok who defeated USA’s David Smith and Skylar Del Sol 2-10, 21-0 when Smith retired with an ankle injury.

In the semifinals, Virgen/Ontiveros beat Smith/Del Sol 21-16, 21-13 while Gonzalez/Piña edged Rodriguez/Haddock in an exciting contest that concluded 21-19, 26-28, 15-13.

Varadero, Cuba will be the
next stop of the NORCECA from June 8 to 10 as teams in both genders prepare for the finals of the Beach Continental Cup in Mazatlan, Mexico from June 19 to 23 where tickets for the London Olympic Games will be available.
