Colombian scores 53 points to equal world record

Madelayne Montaño's feat equals the record of Cuba's Yumilka Ruiz and Croatia's Barbara Jelic-Ruzic

Bogota, Colombia, March 2, 2011 – Colombia's Madelayne Montaño has equalled the record highest points' total in a women's match by scoring an astonishing 53 for her side KT&G Hungkuk in their Korea League fixture against GS Caltex on Tuesday.

With her effort Montaño matched the feats of Cuban Yumilka Ruiz, who scored 53 in 2005 for Russian side Ekaterinburg Moscow, and Croatia's Barbara Jelic-Ruzic, who achieved the same tally for her national team at the 1999 CEV Women's European Championship.

"Madelayne always surprised us with her talent," Colombian Volleyball Federation president Mr Carlos Grizales said. "From the moment she went to play in Korea she proved to be ready for great things. As time went by, she gained international respect and credibility. She had already appeared in the list of top scorers last year as she scored 44 points, but this achievement is undoubtedly the largest volleyball score."

It is the third time Montaño has broken through the 40-point mark this year, having previously picked up 43 and 44 points earlier in the season for the same club.
