Afghanistan Volleyball Federation continues development

Afghanistan wants to use Volleyball as an outlet for people across the country
Kabul, Afghanistan, July 15, 2010 – The Afghanistan Volleyball Federation is continuing its efforts to develop Volleyball in the country through various activities such as Mass Volley, Volleyball festivals and mini Volleyball despite many difficulties facing the country.

Despite continuing political and economical change in the country, the AVF have tried to use Volleyball as an outlet for people across the country.

“We have no gymnasium except the National Olympic Committee one and this gymnasium is used by all indoor sports,” Dr. Mohd.Y.Popalzay, Secretary General of Afghanistan Volleyball Federation, said. “This means we can’t have competitions in the indoor gymnasium and also cannot invite teams from provinces frequently to the capital due to budgetary problems.”

“However, we have decided to conduct short tournaments of one or two days at nice locations where there is a lots of fans and this program would be for three months till end the of August, 2010.”

AVF recently organized tournaments in Paghman, a valley in Afghanistan and they wanted local people to know that “the Federation is committed to building Volleyball in the country despite not having all the required resources but doing its best efforts with the minimum resources to spread Volleyball and entertain people.”

They then organized a Volleyball competition with hundreds of spectators in one of the four districts in remote area called Paghman.

“We don’t have proper gymnasium but it doesn't mean we don’t have interesting Volleyball competitions and fans,” added Dr. Popalzay.

The Federation also encourages their national team players to take part in these types of tournaments in order to make the games interesting for fans.

The Afghanistan national team participated in the South Asian Games held in Dhaka, Bangladesh last February and its current two coaches acted as observers for a FIVB Level II Coaches course held in Chennai in November last year.
