All-German success at World University Champs

The men's podium at the competition
Alanya, Turkey, June 21, 2010 – Germany were all victorious at the World University Championships as the women’s team of Karla Burger and Brita Butter came away with the gold as Nils Rodhe and Stephen Kohler, and Mathis Perk and Alexander Walcerhurst picked up the gold and silver respectively for the country in Alanya, Turkey on Monday.

Burger and Butter beat the Czech Republic’s Marketa Sulikova and Kristina Kocova 2-1 (15-21, 21-18, 15-11) in the women’s final. Sulikova and Kococava started well, picking up the first set easily before Burger and Butter fought back and took advantage of the Czech mistakes in the second. Bad serving eventually cost the Czech duo the game as Germany stormed to a 15-11 win to clinch the title.

It was an all German affair in the men’s final but Rodhe and Kohler had the edge over compatriots Perk and Walcerhost, picking up a 2-0 (21-19, 21-19) win. Both sets were incredibly close and it was only the experience of the older side that saw out the victory.

Elsewhere Germans Marika Steinhof and Victoria Beineck beat the Czech Republic’s Martina Simidova and Sarka Nakladalova 2-1 (24-22, 14-21, 15-12) for the women’s bronze as Poland’s Damian Wojtasek and Rafeaell Szternel beat Brazil’s Santos and Luciano 2-1 (19-21, 21-17, 15-10) for the men’s broze.
