Federbrau pick up second Princess Cup title

Federbrau overcame Zhetyssu to pick up their second title
Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, June 18, 2010 – Thailand’s Federbrau brought the curtain down on the 15th Princess Cup Women’s Volleyball Invitation at home in Nakhon Ratchasima with a hard fought 3-1 (26-24 25-23 25-27 25-13) win over Zhetyssu of Kazakhstan to pick up the title on Friday.

Both sides fielded all national players whose teams will compete in the FIVB World Women’s Volleyball Championship in Japan this October.

The home side had already beaten Zhetyssu in straight sets in the group round-robin preliminaries, but had trouble overcoming the tall visitors 26-24 and 25-23 in the opening two sets.

Zhetyssu, whose height average is 184cm against the rivals’ 176cm, silenced the cheering Thai supporters with an effective block to pick up the third set 27-25 to take the game to a fourth.

However Federbrau regrouped for the final assault and hard-attacking from Onuma Sittirak and Wilavan Apinyapong helped blitz the Kazakhstan side with devastating spikes, taking the set comfortably 25-13 and with that, the championship.

With the dramatic victory, the host girls landed the prestigious trophy of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn for the second time following their 2006 success.

The bronze-medal match saw Taipei from Chinese Taipei stun powerhouse Sichuan from China, runners-up two years ago, in hard-fought five-set thriller, winning 3-2 (12-25, 24-26, 25-15, 25-17, 16-14).

After going down the first two sets, Taipei, led by star spiker Teng Yen Min and southpaw Chen Wan Ting, came to life. The spirited Taiwanese overcame the taller Chinese blockers with deadly cross-court spikes and effective drops to win the remaining three sets.

Meanwhile, in the classification round, Vietnam’s Sport 1 pulled off a convincing straight-sets (25-18, 25-14, 25-16) win over the Peru National Youth Team in the fifth-place play-off, while India’s Chennai produced a magnificent come-from-behind 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-14) victory over Indonesia’s BNI 46 to claim the seventh position.

Thailand Volleyball Association President Pongpayome Wasaphuti watched over the awards presentation and the closing ceremony.

As well as picking up the title, Federbrau also won three individual awards including Best Spiker for Onuma Sittirak, Best Server for Nootsara Tomkom and Most Valuable Player for Wilavan Apinyapong.
