At 24-years-of-age Nikolav has a big future ahead of him and is seen as one of the players to carry Bulgaria forward back into the big time of international volleyball.
His powerful spikes and superb defensive reactions marks him as one of the most important players in the Bulgarian lineup. His form at last year's World Championship, where he finished the tournament as the third-best scorer behind Argentina's Marcos Milinkovic and Ivan Miljkovic from Serbia and Montenegro, an astonishing performance considering Bulgaria finished 14th.
Nikolav isn't just a star in the national team, he led his club Levski Siconco to the Bulgarian national title last year and was voted the best Bulgarian volleyball player of 2002.
