Powerful Russia takes first ever World League title
Russia simply proved too powerful too often on Sunday morning here in this Brazilian city, charging to a 3-1 victory in the finals of the 2002 World League. Although the 2001 titleholders were on the court with their Dream Team and were supported by some 26,000 screaming fans, it was still not enough to beat the might of the Russians who had crept back into the semifinals after a rocky performance in the round robin of the final round.

Brazil wins five set thriller for first finals berth
The Brazilian national team, fired by thousands of fans, opened their bid for a second consecutive World League title by defeating Yugoslavia (3- ) 25-27, 25-19, 25-12, 21-25, 18-16 on Saturday here in Brazil to secure their ticket in Sunday's final here in Belo Horizonte. But the Yugoslav team did not make it easy for the local heroes, capitalizing on early Brazilian nerves to take the first set. The Brazilians equalized to 1-1 and completely overran the Yugoslavs 25-12 in the third. Classic Yugoslav fighting spirit kicked in to allow them back in the match and presented the opportunity for a thriller tiebreaker that finally went to the titleholders 18-16.

Italy were deprived the opportunity to go for their ninth World League title on Saturday when they were cut down by a renaissance Russian side in the semifinals 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-22). The Russians, who slipped back into the semis after Spain went down to Netherlands in the final match of the round robin, were impenetrable on the net and consistently neutralized the skills and finesse of the Squadra Azzurri. Italy now now face Yugoslavia in the playoff for third, while Brazil and Russia contest the title on Sunday morning here in Belo Horizonte, called Brazil's "Volleyball Capital."

But it was Brazil who took their first step to retaining the title they won last year, winning the match 3-1. they di however have to deliver their best Volleyballl to conquer the upstarts Spain, who frightened the home team by winning the second set comfortably.

Although Russia took their opening match against The Netherlands 3-0, it could not be described as easy. But the Russians did show why they are one of the favorites in this prestigeous FIIVB tournament, and underlined they will be doing their best to take their first even World League title. They were very impressive in attack, serving and blocking.

Outsiders Spain proved the giant killers on Wednesday, humbling the mighty favoites in a five-setter that they eventually won 19-17 in the tiebreaker. The match of the day and the best so far in the quarterfinals of the 2002 World League, was played in the northern city of Recife and now sets the winners up for advancement. They play the luckless and set-less Netherlands in their final round robin match, while Russia must face titleholders Brazil in front of a partizan home crowd. Spain delivered a strong game in block and defense, mainly in the first three sets, while at times Russia struggled with their service accuracy.

The Polish team had difficulty in the opening phase and had few answers to the devastating attacks of the Yugoslavs and they powerful defense. They rallied a little in the secodn set until the final stages and when Yugoslavia went 2-0 ahead, they seemed to lose their concentration and let the Yugoslavs walk away with two points and the glory of winning their first match here in Belo Horizonte.
