Rome, Italy, June 13 - The defending men’s and women’s champions are in action for the first time on Day 2 of the FIVB Swatch World Championships Rome 2011 powered by smart.
Julius Brink and Jonas Reckerman start the defence of their world crown with a late match against Russian duo Alexander Likholetov and Alexey Pastukhov.
Meanwhile, April Ross and Jennifer Kessy, the 2009 women's champions, will be in action twice. First up is a clash with Barbara Hansel and Sara Montagnolli of Austria, before they return to the court to meet Hana Klapalova and Lenka Hajeckova later in the day.
Their fellow Americans Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh begin their campaign for a fourth world title to add to their two Olympic gold medals.
Firstly, they will take on the Czech Republic’s Krystina Kolocova and Slukova Marketa, and later will play local favourites Laura Giombini and Valeria Rosso.
Men’s second seeds Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego will make their first appearance against New Zealand pair Kirk Pitman and Jason Lochhead.
